Connecting the Future: NCA Inspires Next Generation of Tech Leaders at St. Lawrence Study Tour

JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN — The National Communication Authority (NCA) hosted students and teachers from St. Lawrence High School for a two-day educational study tour on 21 and 22 July 2026. The visit, held under the theme "Connecting The Future: Inspiring The Next Generation in Digital Innovation," took place at the Authority’s Headquarters in Juba. The initiative forms part of the NCA's ongoing commitment to promoting digital literacy, fostering innovation, and strengthening partnerships with educational institutions across South Sudan. The tour aimed to bridge classroom learning with practical exposure to the telecommunications and information and communication technology (ICT) sectors while encouraging students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and digital innovation. Welcome and Mandate Briefing Mr. Isaac Dada Lemi, the Director of Corporate Affairs, welcomed the delegation and introduced the students to the core mandate and responsibilities of the NCA. His briefing provided the visiting students with foundational insights into how the Authority regulates South Sudan's telecommunications and communications sector. Technical Presentations Throughout the two-day program, technical experts from various NCA directorates delivered presentations designed to expose students to real-world applications of communication technologies. These sessions covered:- Telecommunications Regulation: The legal and structural frameworks governing industry operators. Spectrum Management: The allocation and monitoring of radio frequencies. Cybersecurity Best Practices: Safeguarding digital infrastructure and user data. Computer Emergency Response Team (CIRT): The mechanisms used to detect, prevent, and respond to cyber incidents. Digital Transformation and Emerging Technologies: The technological advancements shaping the future of communications in South Sudan. Leadership Address Speaking during the program, the Director General, Hon. Rizig Dominic Samuel, emphasized the NCA's focus on supporting youth development through targeted educational outreach. Addressing the students directly, he remarked: "Keep up with the mantle and embrace innovation, develop strong digital skills, and become responsible users of technology as South Sudan continues its journey toward a digital economy." Interactive Q&A and Facility Tour Students engaged directly with NCA professionals during dedicated Question and Answer (Q&A) sessions, discussing potential career pathways and the evolving national digital landscape. Visiting teachers expressed their appreciation to the NCA for providing a practical learning environment that complemented the school's academic curriculum. The study tour concluded with a guided tour of selected NCA technical facilities and a group photograph session.

LIBREVILLE, GABON — South Sudan’s National Communication Authority (NCA) highlighted its commitment to practical space science education at the NewSpace Africa Conference 2026. Held from April 20 to 23 in Libreville, Gabon, under the theme "Inclusive Growth: Expanding Space Benefits to All Africans."

Organized by the African Space Agency and hosted by the Gabonese Agency for Space Studies and Observations (AGEOS), the event attracted over 600 delegates from more than 70 countries. Among the policymakers, global space industry experts, researchers, and investors gathered to shape Africa's space strategy. Representing South Sudan, satellite services engineer Zamba Leonel presented the EduSat Nanosatellite Training Kit—a modular platform designed to equip young African engineers with hands-on satellite engineering skills and bridge the gap between classroom theory and mission development.


Bridging the Gap: Classroom Theory to Real Mission Development


While science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields are widely studied in classrooms throughout Africa, practical, hands-on access to functional satellite hardware remains extremely limited. The EduSat platform directly addresses this educational and technological bottleneck.


Designed under the widely adopted CubeSat concept, the EduSat Nanosatellite Training Kit provides students and emerging engineers with a modular, highly accessible gateway to understanding actual space systems. Through physical assembly, testing, and operational simulation, trainees can transition seamlessly from conceptual studies to mission development.

 

Key Subsystems of the EduSat Nanosatellite Kit:


  • Electrical Power System (EPS): Teaches solar power harvesting, energy storage, regulation, and distribution strategies essential for long-term space environments.

  • On-Board Computer (OBC): Serves as the brain of the satellite, introducing learners to real-time embedded systems, command handling, telemetry data gathering, and software engineering.

  • Communication System (COM): Demystifies RF transmitters, receivers, and antenna networks required to establish and maintain steady up/downlink connections.

  • Mechanical Structure: Focuses on the physical engineering of the standardized CubeSat chassis, teaching considerations of structural integrity, thermal dynamics, and integration constraints.

  • Payload Integration: Demonstrates how specialized scientific sensors, cameras, and experimental instruments are safely housed, interfaced, and operated.
